Close to the building, a thirty year old donkey has its tiny meadow. Although this donkey almost prevented the construction of our new facility, it is now part of the T\u00e4fernhof II logo. How it got a golden background? No idea! Unlike the donkey in Grimm&#8217;s fairy tale <em>Tischchen deck dich, Goldesel und Kn\u00fcppel aus dem Sack<\/em>, this donkey has never been observed to produce gold out of his mouth or behind. Hence, I still earn my money by developing digital X-ray detectors.<\/p>\n<p>Part of my team&#8217;s work is to develop fast processing and storage solutions for our customers. For this purpose, we recently purchased a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dell.com\/us\/business\/p\/poweredge-r930\/pd\">DELL PowerEdge R930<\/a> with 144 logical computing cores and 1.2 TB of RAM. It&#8217;s a pity to leave such a machine idle during the weekends! So what to do with it? The obvious answer: Breaking some world records on the computation of mathematical constants with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.numberworld.org\/y-cruncher\/\">y-cruncher<\/a>. On a previous weekend, I already computed a mathematical constant called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lemniscate\">Lemniscate<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.numberworld.org\/y-cruncher\/records.html\">a new world record<\/a> precision of 190 billion digits. If you never heard of it, don&#8217;t mind! I just picked it, because it was the easiest record to break.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pi2e.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/gamma-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"gamma\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pi2e.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/gamma-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/pi2e.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/gamma-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/pi2e.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/gamma-552x832.jpg 552w, https:\/\/pi2e.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/gamma.jpg 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/>Now I&#8217;m curious to see whether a second computation, started on last Thursday, has finished. After logging into the server, I&#8217;m happy to see that I finally managed to set <a href=\"http:\/\/www.numberworld.org\/y-cruncher\/records.html\">a new record<\/a> on the computation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Euler%E2%80%93Mascheroni_constant\">Euler-Mascheroni<\/a> constant, often represented by the Greek letter \u0393. If you&#8217;d like to learn more about the significance of this constant, I recommend you to read the book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/gp\/book\/9783642366277\">Gamma <\/a>by Julian Havil. A few years ago, my former mentor, who taught me programming Smalltalk, presented me with this book. 250 pages just about one number!
